ICT and Computer Ethics

The development of computer technology has revolutionized the human life in many ways. Data are processed in computer to obtain the desired information. We can send, receive, or exchange such information through the interconnected computers from one place to another place in terms of communication very easily. Thus, information and communication are primary objects for every computer related persons, organizations, society and even nation. ICT stands for Information and communication Technologies. It is the recent technology, which processes raw data and gives the complete and desired result as information. ICT includes many communication devices such as radio, television, cellular phones, computer network, etc. for storing, retrieving and manipulation information.

Concept of Data and Information

Data : Data are the raw facts or unprocessed mean which may not give complete sense or meaning before processing. The basic object of computer is to produce meaningful result by processing these tiny piece of information. Data are provided to the computer using keyboard, mouse and required software, so that it can process.

Processing : After the data are fed to the computer, they need to process correctly in order to produce desired information. The processing unit of computer(CPU) performs all the processing operation of entered data according to program instructions The processing unit of computer also executes the program instructions and tells other pards what to do and produce result as an information.

Information : Information is the basic source of communication which is also known as meaningful result. Computer is playing very important role in processing and management of information so that it is also called information processing machine. The information processed by the computer are made accessible throughout the world. It is the outcome of raw data which can be further stored and shared by the people for their use.

Telecommunication 

Telecommunication is the transmission of message over a significant distance through the use of mediums such as landline phones, mobile phones, television, telex, net phone, etc. It enables people to communicate over long distance with the help of opened or closed network.

In the field of communication both information and telecommunication are vital and play important role. Therefore, the combined form of information technology and telecommunication technology is considered as information communication technology(ICT). The advancement in computing and communication technology is increasing a new infrastructure for education, business, science, research and other social interactions. The ignorance of ICT in the days is totally impossible because of its very positive impact in the society for overall development of individual and country.

• Education : Today most schools, colleges and other educational institutes are using ICT in the field of education. Teacher use ICT to prepare teaching materials and research purpose. Students can use it for learning any particular subject with the help of program and CDs.
• Communication : The use of ICT in the field of communication is increasing day by day. You can communicate by using several social sites such as facebook, chatting, email, twitter, etc.
• Banking : ICT plays a very important role in banking sectors. Today the electronic banking system provides 24-hour service with the help of ATM and other system.
• E-commerce : In the field of electronic commerce, the customers, suppliers and employees get benefitted with the use of ICT. E-commerce makes the buying and selling goods and products online.

Computer Ethics

Computer ethics is a set of moral principles or practical behaviors that regulate the use of ICT. It includes some of common social issues such as intellectual property, privacy concern etc. Computer ethics involves the learning what is right and wrong, then doing the right thing.

The commandments of computer ethics are :

• You shall not use computer to harm other people
• You shall not interfere with other people's computer work
• You shall not snoop around in other people's computer files.
